Westworld Is The True Successor To Lost Because It’s Similarly Messy But Lovable

It was more than a decade ago that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse closed the book on Lost. The serial action-drama, which blended in elements of science fiction and light fantasy as the years went on, lasted six seasons on network TV between 2004 and 2010. It survived the 2007 writer's strike as one of the most popular network shows of its time and unfolded during the seismic shift in television, with viewers beginning to move from cable to streaming subscriptions like then-burgeoning versions of Netflix and Hulu.12 years later, Lost exists as a rare hybrid breed of compelling serial drama and so-called "mystery-box," a word sometimes used pejoratively to describe the way JJ Abrams and his writing disciples, like Lost's showrunners, have a penchant for throwing a bunch of...

Netflix’s Bastard!! Is A Refreshingly Self-Aware, Horny Anime

Spicy. Screenshot: LIDEN FILMS / Netflix / KotakuWhen I first watched Netflix’s new anime Bastard!!: Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, I expected a melodramatic anime series along the lines of Record of Lodoss War. What I got was an unapologetically horny show about a wizard and his ever-growing harem of big-haired anime waifus. I loved every second of it. Bastard!!: Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, made by LIDEN FILMS, is a remake of the 1992 anime Bastard!! Ankoku no Hakaishin. Bastard!!!’s elevator pitch in the Kotaku summer anime guide, which you should totes check out by the by, is that a wizard named Dark Schneider is resurrected to save the kingdom of, I shit you not, Meta-Licana (pronounced Metalicana), from evildoers. However, that description is just the tip of the iceberg for what this horne...

343 Reveals Halo Infinite’s Co-Op Beta Launch Date And Details How Cooperative Play Works

As previously promised, Halo Infinite’s long-awaited campaign co-op takes its first steps towards launch, thanks to a network beta flight scheduled for July.   Much like the multiplayer beta that proceeded Infinite’s launch last fall, this co-op beta, which runs July 11 to July 22, allows registered players to tackle the entire campaign alongside a buddy to ensure everything works as planned for the full rollout. Because this is a new campaign build that players must download, 343 states that no previous story progress carries over, so players will be starting from scratch. Progress made during the beta will also not transfer back to the retail version.  In a Halo Waypoint blog post, 343 lead software engineer Isaac Bender and lead world designer John Mulkey discussed the co-op mode’s fe...

Another Fallout London Modder Hired By Bethesda

Image: Kotaku / Bethesda / Folon TeamFallout: London looks great! It honestly could pass as a real, official expansion if you showed it to someone who had no idea it was a fan-created mod. And apparently the company behind Fallout, Bethesda, agrees that London looks marvelous because it keeps hiring up the ambitious mod’s developers.Word of the latest hire came yesterday, on the official Fallout: London Twitter account, when the people behind the project revealed that its lead technical adviser, Ryan Johnson, was leaving the much-hyped Fallout 4 mod’s team to start working for Bethesda. By itself this news is impressive and cool. That Bethesda has come knocking for talent is a testament to how promising the mod’s looking. The mod team said they were all “excited to see the worlds he can bui...

The Sith Lords On Switch Is Finally Playable

Screenshot: Aspyr / Obsidian / NintendoYesterday, the studio behind the Nintendo Switch port of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords announced that it’s finally fixed a game-breaking bug that had previously rendered the game impossible to finish. Previously, those who bought the port of the Obsidian Star Wars RPG were forced to cheat their way past game-crashing cutscenes. This was resolved via an in-game cheat menu, but it was still a band-aid solution at best. Kotaku attempted to use this method to skip past a game-breaking cutscene at the end of a late game questline, but boarding the ship would just cause the game to crash again. But rejoice: the buggy cutscenes have finally been fixed. Sort of.After updating the game, I was finally able to play the previously problematic cut...

Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind 2020’s hit new IP Ghost of Tsushima, has revealed it is not working on anything related to its previous Infamous and Sly Cooper franchises. Since opening its doors more than 20 years ago, the studio has worked on Rocket: Robot on Wheels, the popular Sly Cooper platformer series, the superpowered Infamous series, and of course, Ghost of Tsushima. In this blog post, though, the studio clarifies some things amidst rumors of a Sly Cooper 5 and an Infamous remake.  Sly Cooper “As our games continue to gro...
