Donald Trump Jr. appears before the House January 6 committee, sources say

Donald Trump Jr. appeared Tuesday before the House committee investigating the January 6 attack, four sources confirmed to CBS News. Sources said Trump Jr. testified voluntarily and virtually. Two sources said the interview was "largely uneventful." Another source estimated the interview lasted about three hours, said Trump Jr. did not plead the Fifth and described the interview as "very cordial." Committee chair Bennie Thompson last week said that Trump Jr. was on the deposition wishlist, and that the committee was engaging with him. Trump Jr. spoke at the rally at the Ellipse on January 6 before the attack on the Capitol began. According to the Associated Press, Trump Jr. posted videos backstage of his family and top Trump aides. At that rally, forme...

Bungie tells critics it will ‘never’ avoid politics as it declares support for Roe v. Wade

In the wake of a leaked draft ruling revealing that the US Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade, Destiny 2 studio Bungie has issued a statement saying that it "supports essential healthcare rights'' and is "committed to safeguarding the freedom and privacy of its employees." It also took the opportunity to roast a few followers on Twitter who demanded that the studio "stick to making videogames."The Roe v. Wade decision, issued in 1973, ruled that women in the US have a constitutionally-protected right to abortion, with some limitations based on trimester. The case was sparked by a Texas law that outlawed all access to abortion except in cases where the mother's life was threatened; the court ruled that the law violated the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment of the US Cons...

Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes tried to contact Trump during the January 6 Capitol attack, court documents reveal

Washington – A member of the far-right Oath Keepers group pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the high-level charges of seditious conspiracy and obstructing Congress' certification of the Electoral College votes on January 6, 2021. William Todd Wilson of North Carolina admitted to joining other Oath Keepers, including leader Stewart Rhodes, in planning to use force to halt the peaceful transfer of power from then-President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden.Wilson is now the third member of the militia group to admit to seditious conspiracy – the most severe charge so far brought against alleged members of the January 6 mob – but he is the first to reveal that Rhodes attempted to contact Trump on the evening of the riot.  As part of Wednesday's plea agreem...

Last Call for 5.4.22 — A prime-time read of what’s going down in Florida politics

Last Call — A prime-time read of what’s going down in Florida politics. First Shot Attorney General Ashley Moody announced a multistate agreement with the company behind TurboTax that will claw back millions of dollars for Floridians. The agreement settles allegations that Intuit, the company behind TurboTax and other financial software such as QuickBooks, tricked consumers into paying for tax services that should have been free. “As a result of this multistate investigation, Intuit will have to pay more than $140 million in restitution for allegedly advertising free tax-preparation products and then directing many consumers to pay for upgrades in the service,” Moody said. “Not only have we secured millions for those who were misled into paying for services that they could have obtained fo...

A timeline of the abortion debate at the Supreme Court, from Roe v. Wade to now

Washington — Since the Supreme Court ruled nearly 50 years ago in the case Roe v. Wade that the Constitution protects the right to an abortion, the debate over the issue has raged at the federal and state levels. But the fight over the constitutional right to an abortion will reach its zenith in the coming weeks, when the Supreme Court will issue its highly anticipated decision in a legal fight over a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.Mississippi officials called for the court, now with a 6-3 conservative majority, to use the case known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization as a vehicle for overturning its past abortion decisions, and a draft majority opinion circulated among the justices in February that was published by Politico this week sug...

UT/Texas Politics Project Poll: Texans’ Attitudes Toward Population Growth and State’s Future Sour

AUSTIN, Texas — After two decades of explosive population growth in Texas and amid growing economic disruptions, a majority of Texans said the state is headed in the wrong direction, with more viewing the state’s dramatic population growth as bad for Texas, according to a new University of Texas at Austin/Texas Politics Project Poll. The survey found that a majority of Texas voters now view the state’s sustained population growth either negatively or with uncertainty. By a wide margin, Texans reported being aware of the state’s recent population growth. However, only 34% viewed that growth as good for the state, while 40% said that it has been bad for the state, with the remaining voters unable to offer an opinion, positive or negative. Skepticism about the effects of the s...

One day after draft abortion opinion, Harris says “women’s rights are under attack”

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a clear message Tuesday night to protect women's rights while speaking to a packed room of pro-abortion rights elected leaders, officials and candidates from across the country, one day after a draft opinion leaked that suggested the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade. "Roe v. Wade in its power has protected a woman's right, her right, to make decisions about her own body for nearly half a century," the vice president said.  "If the court overturns Roe v. Wade, it will be a direct assault on freedom, on the fundamental right of self-determination to which we are all entitled as Americans."Her remarks were delivered to an energized crowd gathered at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington for the annual We are EMILY Gala. 700 people were exp...

Trump should not run in 2024 and GOP should “move on,” resist “cheap impersonation,” Hogan says

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said former President Donald Trump should not seek the White House in 2024 and urged fellow Republicans to resist nominating a "cheap impersonation" of Trump in the 2024 presidential primary race."I don't think he should run," Hogan told CBS News in a recent interview at the governor's mansion in Annapolis, Maryland. "It'd be better for the party if we moved on and looked toward the future."Hogan, 65, taunted Trump, musing about whether the 75-year-old former president would be inclined to give up his retirement and risk losing another election. "I just think he's enjoying playing golf five or six days a week. I think — his ego wouldn't take losing another election," Hogan said. "And I think he's not getting any younger." ...

J.D. Vance wins Republican Senate race after Trump endorsement

CBS News has projected J.D. Vance has won the Republican nomination for Senate in Ohio, after he soared to the lead when former President Donald Trump endorsed him. Most of the Republicans vying for the nomination for the open Senate seat sought Trump's endorsement, including former state Treasurer Josh Mandel, who ran as a pro-Trump politician. Ohio has long been seen as the perennial swing state. But Trump won the state by 8 points, and once  Vance won the former president's endorsement, his popularity  soared. A Fox News poll released last week, conducted after Trump endorsed,, showed Vance leading with 23%, over twice the 11% he had registered in a Fox News poll from early March. Vance was once a Trump critic, but earned the former president's endorsement by embracing Trump's views on ...
