AT A DINER WITH THE PAST. >> 8 A.M. ON THE ROAD, DINER TIME. IN KEENE NEW HAMPSHIRE, THAT MEANS ONE THING AND ONE THING — AND ONE PLACE. >> IT HAS BEEN HERE SINCE 1961 AND WE ARE THE FOURTH OWNERS. >> LINDY’S DINER IS ALSO MY FAVORITE KIND, ONE THAT HAS BEEN CLOSED, SAVED AND REOPENED. >> THE NEW OWNERS TOOK OVER IN 2019 JUST BEFORE COVID HIT. >> WE QUESTIONED OURSELVES WHAT WERE WE THINKING, WHEN THEY FIRST SHUT US DOWN WE LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND SAID OH MY, BUT WE HAVE GREAT AMAZING STAFF AND COULD NOT OF DONE IT WITHOUT THEM. >> IT ALSO HELPS THEY HAVE A LOYAL LOCAL FOLLOWING BUILT UP OVER 60 YEARS. >> LINDY’S AS GOT EVERYTHING. >> THE BREAKFAST, JUST AS BIG AND DELICIOUS AS MY LAST VISIT. >> HOMEMADE HASH, MY HAPPY PLACE. AND HOW’S THIS FOR A HAPPY ENDING ACT CO-OWNER CAROL STUBBS, A NATIVE USED TO COME HERE AS A KID. >> ON OUR BIKES WE WOULD COME DOWN, THAT MILK AND HANG OUT AND DO HER THING. >> THE TRUTH IS, CHESTER COUNTY’S ONLY CITY KEENE, POPULATION JUST UNDER 23,000 IS A LIVELY PLACE OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY, ITS PROFILE THESE DAYS AND ITS TASTES ARE CHANGING. >> THERE IS A BIG POPULATION OF FILIPINO PEOPLE HERE, SOUTH AMERICAN, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM JAMAICA. >> THIS MAN WHO GREW UP IN INDIA IS RAISING HIS FAMILY NOW IN THE KEENE AREA, IN 2021 AT HE AND HIS WIFE LAUNCH THE KEENE INTERNATIONAL MARKET TO HELP THE LOCAL IMMIGRANT POPULATION FILL THE VOID THEY FIND LARGER SUPERMARKETS. >> HAVE YOU TRIED THIS BEFORE? I WANT THIS PLACE TO BE A COMMUNITY PLACE WHERE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE COMING HERE AND ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS THEY WANT TO TRY OR THINGS THEY HAVE SEEN SOMEWHERE. >> PRESENTLY, PRODUCTS FROM MORE THAN 30 COUNTRIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE SHELVES, PRODUCE PINS AND FEEZERS HERE. AND HE IS ENCOURAGED THAT HE’S FILLING A LOCAL NEED. >> I WILL BE HERE AND I CAN SEE PEOPLE IN THE BACK LIKE OH MY GOD THEY HAVE THIS, THEY HAVE THAT. >> FOR OTHER VISITORS, HE IS WELL USED TO BEING ASKED WHAT IS THIS? >> THIS IS A FRUIT CALLED RON PATHAN. >> IT IS SORT OF A CROSS BETWEEN A GRAPE AND A PAIR. A LITTLE BIT? >> YEAH. >> WHILE THE KEENE INTERNATIONAL MARKET TAKES SOME FINDING, VISITORS CAN’T MISS THE HUGE MURALS ON THE SIDES OF MANY BUILDINGS HERE. DESIGNED AND PAINTED BY THE RENOWNED WILD DOGS MURAL ARTISTS IN 2019, EACH ONE FEATURES A UNIQUE AND SIGNIFICANT ELEMENT IN KEENE’S HISTORY. ONE IN PARTICULAR CAUGHT OUR EYE. >> JENNY POWERS, A HUMANE SOCIETY AGENT WORKING IN THIS COMMUNITY. SHE IS A WOMAN WITH NO FEAR AND SHE BECOMES KNOWN NATIONALLY AS THE WOMAN WHO DARES AND RECOGNIZES AS HAVING ARRESTED MORE MEN THAN ANY OTHER WOMAN IN THE COUNTRY. >> YOU CONSIDER HER THE FIRST WOMAN DEPUTY SHERIFF? THE BADGE IS A BIG PART OF THE STORY. >> IT IS. >> HER OWN LIFE TOUCHED WITH TRAGEDY, JENNY POWERS BECAME A CHAMPION OF THE VULNERABLE AND DEFENSELESS WEATHER PROTECTING ABUSED ANIMALS OR CHILDREN. >> HERE IS ONE WOMAN THAT WAS REACHING OUT OF HER COMFORT ZONE TO MAKE YOUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE. >> JUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE MURAL IS SOMETHING THAT IS ALSO MAKING KEENE A BETTER PLACE FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS, THE HISTORIC COLONIAL THEATER WHICH OPENED IN 1924 AS A MOVIE HOUSE, FELL ON HARD TIMES IN THE 70’S AND 80’S. BUT, IT WAS SAVED IN THE LATE 90’S BY RE-CREATING IT AS A NONPROFIT. AND BY A CITY THAT WAS DETERMINED NOT TO LOSE IT. >> ANY TOWN THAT HAS A SURVIVING, AND I SAY THRIVING LIKE THE COLONIAL, THEATER IN IT — IS BECAUSE OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT. 100%. >> IN 2020, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEPENDED ON THAT SUPPORT TO OVERSEE A MASSIVE RENOVATION OF THE COLONIAL THEATRE. FROM ITS HOUSE AND ORIGINAL ARTWORK TO ITS ENTRY AREA AND LOBBY. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT’S BACKSTAGE AND FLIGHT SPACE, ENABLING THE THEATER TO DO LARGE TOURING PRODUCTIONS LIKE STOMP. >> WE EXTENDED THE STAGE HOUSE. >> BEHIND THE HISTORIC THEATER ITSELF, THEY ALSO OPENED SHOW ROOM, A SMALLER PERFORMANCE SPACE APTLY NAMED FOR THE LONG GONE CAR DEALERSHIP THAT WAS ONCE THERE. WHAT IS STILL HERE AND CONTINUES TO FUEL ALL THIS IS STRONG COMMUNITY SUPPORT FROM A SMALL CITY THAT HAS STOOD TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME. >> I THINK IN MANY WAYS, KEENE IS A UNIQUE PLACE IN THE COLONIAL IS VERY FORTUNATE TO BE SITUATED SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT. >> AND WELL KEENE RESIDENTS HAVE PLAYED A HUGE ROLE IN THE REVITALIZATION OF THE THEATER, SO HAVE MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENTS. KEENE IS JUST A SHORT DRIVE OVER THE NEW HAMPSHIRE BORDER. >> IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WOMAN WHO DARES, JENNY POWERS, I AM CER
