These secretary of state candidates allied with Trump in 2022. Here’s how they fared

Several of the Republican candidates for secretary of state who endorsed by former President Donald Trump lost in the midterm elections on Nov. 8, effectively narrowing any avenue to try to influence the top elections officials in battleground states in the next election.Jim Marchant, of Nevada; Audrey Trujillo, of New Mexico; Kim Crockett, of Minnesota; Kristina Karamo, of Michigan; and Mark Finchem, of Arizona, are among those defeated by their Democratic opponents after campaigning on the false claims that President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election was invalid. There were 27 secretary of state races on the ballot across the U.S. Although elections for this office don't usually attract much notice, they garnered more attention in the wake of the 2020 president...

Democrats and the 2022 midterm surprises — “The Takeout”

Donald Trump is weaker than he was in 2020, President Biden is primed to "beat him like a drum," Democrats still have a branding problem and Florida is now a party "reclamation project" — those are just some of the midterm takeaways from Mr. Biden's pollster, John Anzalone, who appeared on "The Takeout" this week. Anzalone said that he, like many Democratic strategists and pollsters, was far more worried than Mr. Biden about widespread Democratic loses in House, Senate and gubernatorial races."Joe Biden was right and I was wrong," Anzalone said. "A bunch of things happened that we haven't seen happen in a long time. All the rules have been thrown out since 2016."Anzalone described these midterm surprises:Mr. Biden's approval rating improved from the summer to the fall, despite persi...

After campaign filled with hundreds of election deniers, newly elected House members face uncertain Capitol landscape

The multi-billion-dollar midterm elections were punctuated by vicious campaign ads, personal attacks and hundreds of candidates who had made baseless claims of fraud about former President Donald Trump's defeat in 2020.    But in the ashes of the political firestorm, some of those projected to win their races and become first-time House members are striking a conciliatory tone and pledging to work across party lines. Those include some of those projected to win tough fights in battleground districts.Based on the latest CBS News projections, the incoming class of dozens of new members of Congress is expected to include an openly gay Republican from the New York City area; a Democratic immigration rights advocate from West Michigan who flipped a red district to blue; an upstate New Y...

Trump privately infuriated over midterm election results, source says

A senior source close to former President Donald Trump told CBS News that the former president has been privately infuriated over the results of the midterm elections, despite his posts on social media touting them as a win and a "great evening."According to the source, the former president has been "blaming everyone except himself" over the results, including his aides and Fox News host Sean Hannity. The person said Tuesday night's better-than-expected results for Democrats were mainly due to the elections becoming "a referendum" on Trump, his candidate picks, and his continued focus on relitigating the 2020 election. As of Wednesday, CBS News estimated the Senate is a toss-up, with four contests yet to be called. Two of those contests were toss-ups, and one of those, Georgia, will...

New Hampshire Senate results: 2022 Midterm Elections

Throughout the campaign season, Hassan touted provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act that aimed to bring down health care and prescription drug prices. She also focused on meeting with small businesses throughout the Granite State. On abortion, she warned that if they took the majority Republicans would pass a federal abortion ban. While she had a record of voting with Democrats on nearly every issue including all of the major pieces of legislation passed since President Biden took office, Hassan on the campaign trail took a tougher stance on the border – calling for more border patrol, technology funding and even physical barriers. She also supported delaying the end of title 42, used to keep out asylum seekers during the coronavirus pandemic. This past spring, she mad...

Ex-White House staffers on fixing America’s divisions: “It’s not going to be a politician that saves us”

As voters head to the polls Tuesday to decide which party controls Congress and choose their local leaders, some say it will take more than politicians to fix America's divisions, which have resulted in political violence."It won't be an elected official that's going to save us," said CBS News political contributor Ashley Etienne, who has served as a senior advisor to Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi."We're gonna have to say, enough is enough," she said. Etienne noted that the current Congress "opened up with" a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol and threats to hang the vice president of the United States. It was bookended by an attack last month on Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, in...

2022 midterms have “significant stakes for the climate.” These are the state and local measures to watch.

The countdown to Election Day is now in the single digits, and this year there are a number of major issues on the line. One of those issues could have implications for humanity as a whole: climate change. "This midterm election has significant stakes for the climate," Geoffrey Henderson, a postdoctoral associate at Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy, told CBS News. Clean energy, pollution and infrastructure upgrades are all important aspects of climate policy that have found their way onto the ballot. Andrew Pershing, director of climate science at the nonpartisan research group Climate Central, told CBS News, "The earlier you act, the more effective the actions are and the cheaper they are and the more benefits you get."  "Even though the s...
