Kotaku’s Cosplay Gallery From The 2022 New York Comic Con

New York was able to hold its biggest Comic-Con since 2019 last month, and fans certainly turned up for it; around 200,000 people went through the turnstiles between October 6-9 at the Javits Center, many of them cosplayers. In this gallery you’ll find a collection of some of our favourite cosplay from the event, with highlights ranging from people wearing costumes to people wearing enormous costumes.First, though, this video recap of the event by Mineralblu! And after that, clicking through the slideshow will be a collection of photos (also taken by Mineralblu), in which you’ll find each cosplayer’s character, series and social media information watermarked on each image. Amazing New God of War Ragnarok Cosplay Brings Kratos To Life

We’ve featured German cosplayer Maul a ton of times on Kotaku, maybe more than any other individual cosplayer, and there’s a very good reason for that: just look at these photos. Halo Infinite Winter Update's New Multiplayer Maps09:15God of War Ragnarök's First Nine MinutesToday 4:04PMWhile he’s best known for his recurring takes on Geralt of Rivia, ranging from “being Geralt” to “being Geralt skateboarding in LA”, Maul has also done a ton of work—both paid (like this, this one’s an ad for PlayStation) and personal—on series like Dishonored, Cyberpunk and Metal Gear Solid as well. Today, though, we’re looking at his latest shoot, an incredible take on God of War’s Kratos for the release of Ragnarok that sees Maul (and his team) nailing just about everything, from the costume to the weather...

Incredible Cosplay Photo Gallery From New York Comic-Con 2022

We post galleries from major cosplay shows all the time, and they’re always excellent, but for the recent New York Comic-Con one photographer wanted to do things a little differently.Wanting to try something beyond just taking nice photos, veteran photographer Andrew Boyle (disclaimer: I wrote the foreword for his book) thought that for this year’s show he’d try to make the cosplayer “the sole focus” of his work. “After my cosplay photo book ‘Heroes & Villains’ came out in 2017, I thought I’d relax it up a bit with the subject matter, but it kept pulling me back; the effort, the enthusiasm and the sense of community amongst the costumed fans,” Boyle tells Kotaku. “I shoot in a uniform style inspired by the portraits of Richard Avedon, so that the sole focus is the subject without backg...

Cosplay Universe Is A Great Documentary About The Craft

Image: Cosplay UniverseI’ve been covering cosplay for well over a decade now, and in that time I’ve seen loads of books, posts, YouTube videos and even TV series about the subject. What I had never seen, until now, was someone actually go and make a documentary as slick and comprehensive as Cosplay Universe.A feature-length film, available now on most digital platforms, Cosplay Universe looks at the history, the people, the craft and the culture, and features interviews with everyone from Yaya Han to Jessica Nigri to Stan Lee (the film has been in production for a while). Here’s the official pitch:The award winning documentary, “Cosplay Universe,” gives viewers a window into the ever growing and evolving world of cosplay. What started in Japan as a subculture defined by a communal love of...

The Best Cosplay Photos From Japan Expo 2022 Paris, France

Just like big shows in the US, cosplay conventions are slowly returning to the calendar in Europe as well, and that includes Japan Expo, held in France and the biggest of its kind on the continent. It’s been three years since we last ran a gallery from the show, which is billed as “the biggest festival for Japanese culture and entertainment in Europe”. This year’s event took place between July 14-17 in Paris, and while there aren’t attendance figures available yet, the last one—held in 2019—brought over 250,000 people through the doors of the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center.AdvertisementThe photos below were kindly provided to us by Stéphane You, and you can check out more of his work at his Instagram and Facebook pages.
