Valley Independent Sentinel | Letter: Don’t Let Partisan Politics…

DERBY — It’s disappointing to see the blatant politicization of just about every issue by the Derby Democrats. Based on recent letters sent to the Editor you would think we are having a Mayoral election this year. The Mayor is being criticized for not having done anything, but yet now being criticized for trying to do something.  The election is still over a year away, but getting the roads paved is somehow just a political stunt? As a Derby Taxpayer, I support investments in our infrastructure no matter when they are. Since we have an election every two years, I suppose everything the Mayor does is now considered to be an election year stunt. Joining the list of critics of the Mayor is the BOE Chairman. I am trying to understand this since he is the same person who managed the M...

Latino leaders hope Colorado’s new 8th congressional district will bring a new era of political representation

Stacy Suniga stood nervously outside a conference room at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley last Thursday, hoping the room would fill up. Suniga leads the Latino Coalition of Weld County, and she was one of several hosts of a political candidate forum designed to draw in Latino voters. But she knew from her community outreach work that motivating voters was going to be an uphill battle.  “We found that there’s a lot of distrust among Latino groups to even be involved in the political process,” Suniga said. “I see Latinos disengaged with either major party,” or thinking their votes don’t count, she added. She said she has felt that herself in northern Colorado.  “When you feel that your specific needs or cultural needs are not being met – they’re not even being listened to ...

Andrew Cuomo to host new weekly podcast, leaves door open to politics

Photo illustration: Brendan Lynch/Axios. Photo: Carlo Allegri-Pool/Getty ImagesFormer New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is launching a new podcast on the subscription podcast platform Quake, he told Axios. Why it matters: It's the former governor's first major public undertaking since resigning last year in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal. Details: The new hour-long show, called "As a Matter of Fact,” will debut weekly on Thursdays, beginning this week. The show's first guest is former White House communications director and Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci. The first two episodes will be free, but the others will be paywalled, Cuomo said. The podcast, which will be recorded in Manhattan, will also be available as a video. The show will feature radio-like call-ins, Cuomo said. A b...

GOP seat lead shrinks as Biden approval ticks up — CBS News Battleground Tracker poll

Republicans head into the fall still in position to gain enough House seats for a majority, but a tumultuous summer has made their advantage appear a little smaller today — with a trend so far pointing toward narrow gains instead of a wave. Our CBS News Battleground Tracker estimates Republicans at 226 seats today, down from 230 estimated in July. A majority of 218 is needed to win control. While Republicans continue to lead with people who prioritize the economy, at least three things are tempering their overall advantage:Abortion rights: it's still on voters' minds, buttressing Democratic support and helping them with women in swing districts. Gas prices: most report prices in their area coming down, and with them, views of Biden's handling...

Republican campaign ads hammer Democrats on inflation

Each month brings new 40-year highs in inflation and this year has seen spiking prices at the pump, in the grocery store and in housing — a fact that has not escaped the notice of Republicans hoping to parlay those numbers into election victories in the fall. One avenue Republicans are taking is advertising: Republican lawmakers, candidates and conservative groups have been hammering Democrats with advertisements over the airwaves and online about inflation. "Liberals spent trillions on a wasteful spending bill, and now we face record inflation," the narrator said in an ad by the American Action Network. A National Republican Senate Committee ad slapped a price tag on the inflationary costs Americans are paying in Wisconsin, where Sen. Ron Johnson is running for reelection: "$5,000...
