Jan. 6th Committee member Jamie Raskin on Trump: “People are hungering for justice and for accountability and consequences”

After more than a thousand interviews and hours of televised hearings, one of the highest-profile Congressional investigations since Watergate, the January 6th Committee, will soon release a sweeping report. The looming question: will the report urge the Justice Department to prosecute former President Donald Trump? For now, the committee is coy. But Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin, one of its leading members, has reached his own, personal conclusion on whether Trump committed a crime. "Well, absolutely," he said. "I mean, for one thing, there's this mega-offense of coup and insurrection against the constitutional democracy. But then that mega-offense includes hundreds of statutory criminal offenses. And I think – speaking personally – that Donald Trump could be prosecuted for severa...

Trump dined with Kanye West and white nationalist Nick Fuentes, adviser says

Former President Donald Trump had dinner Tuesday at his Mar-a-Lago estate with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West, a Trump adviser confirmed to CBS News on Friday. The former president said in a statement to CBS News that he did not know who Fuentes was, nor that he would be arriving with West, who is also known as Ye.  "Kanye West very much wanted to visit Mar-a-Lago. Our dinner meeting was intended to be Kanye and me only, but he arrived with a guest whom I had never met and knew nothing about," Trump said in a statement to CBS News. The news of the dinner was first reported by Axios. Fuentes is a leading figure on the far-right, having attended the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in 2017 and the "Stop the Steal" ral...

Donald Trump is at his weakest political position in years

CNN  —  Former President Donald Trump is giving it another go. He announced last week that he’s trying to become only the second man (after Grover Cleveland) to be elected to non-consecutive terms as US president. Trump’s move comes at a time when his political brand is at its weakest point since his first presidential bid in 2015-2016. He does remain a force to be reckoned with in GOP circles, and the news that the Justice Department has appointed a special counsel to oversee investigations related to the former president could elicit a rally-around-Trump effect among Republicans. Nevertheless, it’s clear his power within the party has diminished following the 2022 midterm elections. The easi...

Garland names special counsel to oversee Trump documents case, aspects of Jan. 6 probe

Attorney General Merrick Garland has named a special counsel to oversee the entirety of the Justice Department's criminal investigation into the retention of national defense information at former President Donald Trump's residence at Mar-a-Lago and key aspects of the Jan. 6 investigation."I'm here today to announce the appointment of the special counsel in connection with two ongoing criminal investigations that have received significant public attention," Garland said. Garland announced at a news conference Friday that John "Jack" Smith will be the special counsel tasked with investigating and deciding whether charges should be brought. He called Smith an "impartial and determined prosecutor." Smith is currently the chief prosecutor for the special counsel in the Hague.  ...

Trump Organization lawyers put former CFO Allen Weisselberg’s plea deal in the spotlight

Attorneys in the Trump Organization's criminal trial sought Friday to drum up doubts about a plea deal struck by the prosecution's key witness.Former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg was charged along with two Trump Organization entities in July 2021 with more than a dozen counts related to fraud and tax evasion. Weisselberg entered a guilty plea in the case in August. Prosecutors for the Manhattan district attorney agreed to recommend a five-month jail sentence, and repayment of back taxes, in exchange for Weisselberg's testimony against the company at trial. Former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg leaves the courtroom for a lunch recess during the Trump Organization's criminal trial at the New York Supreme Court on Nov. 17, 2022 in New York City. ...

Democrats and the 2022 midterm surprises — “The Takeout”

Donald Trump is weaker than he was in 2020, President Biden is primed to "beat him like a drum," Democrats still have a branding problem and Florida is now a party "reclamation project" — those are just some of the midterm takeaways from Mr. Biden's pollster, John Anzalone, who appeared on "The Takeout" this week. Anzalone said that he, like many Democratic strategists and pollsters, was far more worried than Mr. Biden about widespread Democratic loses in House, Senate and gubernatorial races."Joe Biden was right and I was wrong," Anzalone said. "A bunch of things happened that we haven't seen happen in a long time. All the rules have been thrown out since 2016."Anzalone described these midterm surprises:Mr. Biden's approval rating improved from the summer to the fall, despite persi...

“Her most important role now is as his daughter.”

Ivanka Trump this week announced she was not joining her father Donald Trump as he makes a third bid for the White House—ruling out her own return to the political arena. Instead, she is concentrating on her life in balmy Miami—far from the wintry climes of Washington D.C. —with her three children and husband Jared Kushner. It’s been a year of highs and lows for the statuesque blonde, who we’re told, feels that she and her husband “left it all on the field” when they departed the White House last January. In July, she was left heartbroken when her mother, Ivana Trump died aged 73 following a fall at her Manhattan home. (That home just hit the market for a cool $26.5 million). A month later, Trump, 41, dealt with yet another blow when her husband underwe...

Ivanka Trump says she will not be involved in Donald Trump’s 2024 run

Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former President Donald Trump who served as a White House adviser in the Trump administration, said Tuesday night shortly after her father announced his 2024 campaign that she does "not plan to be involved in politics" this time."I love my father very much," Ivanka Trump posted on Instagram. "This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family." Donald Trump announced Tuesday night that he is running for president again in 2024. Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, were key White House officials in Donald Trump's administration. But following Donald Trump's loss to President Joe Biden in 2020, the couple has since moved away from politics.  The Hous...

Donald Trump is no Grover Cleveland

A version of this story appears in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here. CNN  —  Former President Donald Trump wants to do a full Grover Cleveland and match the only US president to lose a presidential election and then rise from the ashes to regain the White House four years later. Other examples of former presidents trying to regain power have gone poorly. Theodore Roosevelt’s progressive rebellion split open a schism in the GOP; neither Herbert Hoover nor Martin Van Buren could get the Republican nomination after previous losses. So if Trump does indeed announce his third White House run, he’ll be trying to emulate Cleveland, who won, lost and then w...

Weisselberg family at center of Trump Organization trial in New York

At the heart of the Trump Organization trial is a family — with a name other than Trump. Allen Weisselberg, the company's former chief financial officer, has entered a guilty plea in the case. His son Barry Weisselberg, who works for the company, has been mentioned dozens of times, as has Allen's wife Hilary. Barry's ex-wife Jennifer has also been mentioned repeatedly, as well as their two school-aged children. The Weisselbergs, both sides in the case agree, lived large on the company dime.  Donald Trump personally signed a lease agreement in 2005 for a $6,500 per month apartment on New York's leafy Riverside Boulevard, lived in by Allen Weisselberg and his wife. By 2016 the rent was $8,200 a month, according to records shown in court. Barry, Jenn...
