Mayor Eric Adams accuses Texas governor of playing racial politics by continuing to send asylum seekers to Black-run cities

NEW YORK -- There is another war of words between Mayor Eric Adams and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The mayor insists the asylum seeker crisis is about race for the Republican governor.Forced to cope with a flood of asylum seekers, and with city services taxed to the max, Adams fired his big bazookas once again at Abbott on Tuesday, accusing him of using those coming to America as political pawns and, more explosively, of playing racial politics."I cannot ignore the fact that Gov. Abbott sent migrants only to cities where there are Black mayors and it's undermining our cities," Adams said.READ MORE: Mayor Eric Adams wants to create new agency to cope with influx of asylum seekers With more than 59,000 asylum seekers in New York City, the mayor says the facts are indisputable."Gov....

Texas gubernatorial debate: Beto O’Rourke, Greg Abbott spar on guns, abortion and immigration

Guns. Abortion. . Texas' closely-watched gubernatorial race hit the final stretch Friday night at the first — and likely only — debate between incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke, as the candidates sparred on some of the biggest issues facing votes in the state. While recent polls have shown O'Rourke trailing Abbott by around 7 points, this still could be the closest Texas governor's race in years. Abbott won in 2014 by over 20 points, and in 2018 by over 13 points. Abbott and O'Rourke have not squared off in person since the day after the Uvalde school shooting, when O'Rourke confronted Abbott during a press conference. O'Rourke has continued to hammer Abbott for his response to the shooting, even holding a press conference ahead of the d...

The facts behind the Republican effort to send migrants to Democratic-led cities

The intensifying Republican-led efforts to protest President Biden's policies along the southern border by transporting migrants to Democratic-controlled jurisdictions like Martha's Vineyard and Washington, D.C., have reignited a decades-old, divisive debate over U.S. immigration policy. The Biden administration, Democrats and advocates have called the transportation tactic a dehumanizing political stunt, accusing Republican-led states of using desperate asylum-seekers as props. Republican governors in Texas, Florida and Arizona have argued their efforts force Democratic cities to share the burden of accommodating migrants, which they say has fallen mostly on communities in their states.Beyond the political back-and-forth, the busing and flying of migrants to locations selected by R...

Ron DeSantis, a Republican, took credit for flying roughly 50 Venezuelan migrants to Martha's Vineyard, an island off the Massachusetts coast, without alerting local officials. On Thursday morning, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott boasted about busing another group of migrants to a street near the Naval Observatory, which houses the vice president's official residence. The state actions this week are part of a broader campaign by three Republican governors to rebuke the Bid...

Texas governor authorizes state officials to arrest migrants and transport them to border crossings

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday authorized state officials and National Guardsmen to arrest migrants who enter the U.S. unlawfully and transport them to federal ports of entry along the border with Mexico, the latest escalation in his feud with the Biden administration over immigration policy.Abbott signed a directive purporting to give the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety the authority to apprehend migrants who enter the U.S. in between ports of entry or "commit other violations of federal law." The order also empowered state officials to "return" these migrants to ports of entry, which are administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a federal agency. While Abbott has signed other directives targeting Biden administration border polic...
