Anna Diop Delivers a Hauntingly Good Performance in Nanny

The universe has a funny way of bringing things full circle. For actress Anna Diop, finding her way to the film Nanny was one of those moments. It started a couple of years back when a writer on the show Titans emailed her about an exciting new filmmaker named Nikyatu Jusu. He thought she could be the next Barry Jenkins and encouraged Diop to check out her work. She watched Jusu’s short film Suicide by Sunlight and was blown away. “I was so taken by the originality of the story—the way that it was told through this dark genre, the social issues she was contending with in the story, the characters. Just across the board, I was really impressed with this filmmaker,” she says from a hotel room in New York City. Diop sent Jusu’s stuff to her reps hoping to connect, but nothing came of it. Two ...

Visibility in Fashion Isn't Just Pressing—To These Indigenous Models, It’s Vital

Let's get one thing clear: the fashion industry's relationship to marginalized communities has always been fraught. It doesn't take an expert eye to see the long of history sidelining and often straight-up excluding many identities that don't fit into a stringent box of thin, cis-gendered, heterosexual, and white. The charge for more representation—be it for radical size inclusivity or commitments to racial diversity—has largely left out Native Americans despite the (often misappropriated) influence on fashion and beauty their rituals and traditions have contributed to.So while representation may seem like a surface-level answer to some, to these three Native American models, it's not just important—it's their everything. "I have people message me constantly," shared Valentine Alvarez, "I ...

From NYC to Paris—4 Brands You Need to Know Ahead of Fashion Month

Contrary to popular belief, fashion month is more than just a mecca for established brands with storied histories. Yes, the industry’s giants oftentimes exhibit their latest collections on elaborate runways, a star-studded guest list seated casually in the front row. And yes, those esteemed labels often receive much of the media’s attention post-show. But by no means does that tell the whole story. In addition to runway shows housed at the Louvre in Paris (Louis Vuitton), the Armory in New York City (Marc Jacobs), and the Tate Modern in London (Stella McCartney), fashion month offers hundreds of presentations that exist on a much smaller scale. Often attended by close friends and local press, these events manifest as quaint dinners, video releases, and gallery exhibitions, the likes of whi...

The Best Looks From 2022 Paris Couture Week

Photo: Imaxtree Tailoring and, by extension, suiting have always been a consequential part of haute couture—after all, stitching can single-handily change how a garment fits our form. So it is no surprise that we'd find suiting in couture collections, including Viktor & Rolf's FW/22 collection. But in proper form to these couturiers's provocative perspective to design, these weren't your typ...

Roe v. Wade Has Been Overturned—Here's What You Can Do

Today, the United States is regressing nearly 50 years. The unthinkable has happened—Roe v. Wade has officially been overturned, and women have lost bodily autonomy in the United States. Abortion will now likely become illegal or severely limited in roughly half of the U.S., and it is now immediately illegal in the 13 states with trigger laws, which were in place to ban abortion the second Roe v. Wade protections ended. Many of us have mothers and grandmothers who fought for abortion access before us, and now, our generation is faced with its own fight. It’s important to remember that even if abortion access is restricted or made illegal, that won’t put an end to abortions—instead, it will put an end to safe abortions.Data shows that while Roe v. Wade’s end will impact all women seeking an ...
