The Best And Worst Parts Of Every Assassin’s Creed Game

Image: UbisoftBest: Commanding Other Assassins: In the next entry in the Ezio trilogy, players get to help start their own chapter of assassins. Sure, this involves some busywork, but it also means you eventually get the ability to command assassins with a simple button press. And it rules! Walking through an area and using your assassins to take out guards one by one, without having to lift a sword, is still one of my favorite video game memories. Worst: Sequel Onslaught: Assassin’s Creed II was released on November 17, 2009. Brotherhood was released basically a year later, on November 16, 2010. This was the start of yearly installments of the franchise, and that’s not even counting spin-offs, mobile games, DLC, and ports. The final game in the Ezio Trilogy, Revelations, would release alm...

Kotaku’s Impressions Of The New Shin Chan: My Summer Vacation

Image: Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day JourneyIn 2000, a game called Boku no Natsuyasumi (“My Summer Vacation”) was released on the PlayStation. As the name suggests, it was about being a kid on summer vacation, and its slow pace and cruisy setting made it something of a cult classic, though one that sadly never saw an official English-language release.Over the decades a number of other games were released in the series, on PlayStation 2, PSP and PS3, and each one was largely the same experience, asking players to guide a young boy through the day doing stuff like fishing, collecting bugs and going for a swim.Based around a calendar, the best way I think I can describe the games to anyone who hasn’t played them is to imagine Persona 4's daily schedu...

Tencent And Sony Acquire 30% Of Elden Ring Maker FromSoftware

Image: FromSoftwareElden Ring wasn’t just a hit with fans of FromSoftware’s notoriously difficult action-RPGs. Today Tencent Holdings and Sony announced they’ve acquired 30% of the Souls-series developer’s shares, split in favor of Tencent. FromSoftware is expected to gain $260 million from the arrangement.Today’s announcement from FromSoft’s parent company Kadokawa revealed that Sony and Tencent are acquiring 14.09% and 16.25% of FromSoft, respectively. The statement indicates that Kadokawa wants FromSoftware to be able to expand its development efforts; Kadokawa sees the “enhancement of capabilities for the creation, development and deployment of [FromSoft] game IP as one of the [Kadokawa] Group’s highest priorities.”One of the aims is to give FromSoft the resources needed to grow Elden ...

New Alone In The Dark Reboot Game Announced By THQ Nordic

Image: THQ NordicIn 1992, a horror game called Alone in the Dark was released. It was notable for the fact that it was basically doing a lot of what would later make Resident Evil so popular—the fixed camera angles, the deliberate gunplay—only it had a lot more purple in it.It was a very good game, and did well enough that two sequels were released through the 1990s. In 2001, though, what was originally planned as a fourth game ended up becoming a reboot. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare came full circle by copying a lot of Resident Evil’s visual trappings and setting the game in the present day. It sucked.Seven years later, in 2008, the series was rebooted again on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and once again, it sucked. And in 2015 the Alone in the Dark franchise had reached a new low with a...

Game Pass Vs. The New PS Plus, The Comparison We Had To Make

Image: Sony / Microsoft / KotakuTwo months ago, Sony reimagined PS Plus, its longtime membership program for PlayStation owners. Now, it looks a whole lot like Microsoft’s Game Pass: For roughly the same amount of money, both offer access to a Netflix-style games-on-demand library. Obviously, we had to stack the two services up against each other.PriceGame Pass is available as a subscription for console, PC, or both. The two separated tiers cost $10 a month. Xbox Live Ultimate, which joins the two and provides access to the EA Play Library (a similar games-on-demand service) and Xbox Live Gold, costs $15 a month. There is no way to pay for multiple months or a year up front at a tiered markdown (at least officially).PS Plus is also available for a subscription, but it gets very complicated...

Sega Please Release The Yakuza Kenzan Spin-Offs In English

Screenshot: SegaIn 2022 Yakuza is a pretty big series in the West, as we saw yesterday when eight games made it to PlayStation Plus. But it wasn’t always this way! Between the release of Yakuza 2 and 3 things were looking incredibly dicey for English-speakers, and there were real fears that if Yakuza 3 didn’t sell well, it would be the last game in the franchise we’d ever get to see here.I know this sounds absurd given the number and prominence of Yakuza games around these days, but it’s true! Folks were so anxious about it, in fact, that every tiny little change that Sega made to Yakuza 3's English release was scrutinised to hell and back, with fans terrified that any little thing that could potentially hurt sales would mean the end of the series in the West. All that fear counted for noth...

Sony Hiring Emulation Engineer Suggesting Hope For PS3 On PS5

Image: SonyA new job ad, reported by PlayStation Lifestyle after being spotted on ResetEra, strongly suggests that Sony might be trying to hire an engineer to get its PS3 emulation sorted. There’s also rumor of getting old PS3 peripherals working on the new machine. Which would all be such a relief. If you have partaken of Sony’s relaunched PlayStation Plus for the PS4 and PS5, you’ll have noticed that when exploring the 400+ games in its extensive archives, everything on PS3 has to be streamed. And oh man, the streaming sucks. The PS5 has, so far, been incapable of running PS3 emulation, which makes for a massive bummer when it comes to missing out on that entire generation of games on modern machines. The rebooted PS+ offers the option to download games from the PS1, PSP, PS2, PS4, and of ...
