The Sims 4 Devs Apologize To Black Creators After Big Showcase

Screenshot: Electronic ArtsAfter EA unveiled the next installment of The Sims during last week’s Sims Summit, Black content creators were not happy about the lack of inclusion. Critics noted that out of twenty or so people shown, only one was a Black streamer. The publisher showcased Project Rene (which we’ve been calling The Sims 5) and an official modding hub to its eager audience at the Summit on October 18. The stream celebrated its content creator community with a two-minute segment showing their reactions to the baby update. EA included more white people with non-American accents than it did Black creators overall.“Black Simmers [have] been a major impact on The Sims community for years. Literally, the backbone for providing skin tones, body features, hairstyles, and more. Everything ...

The Sims 4 Will Be Free On All Platforms Starting Next Month

The Sims 4Image: EA / MaxisEA announced today that starting next month, the base Sims 4 game on all platforms will be free to download and play. It also announced an upcoming livestream in which Maxis will lay out its plans for the game’s future updates. The Sims 4 is the latest entry in the long-running and incredibly popular life simulation franchise. Like past games in the series, it lets players create their own characters and homes, then watch these digital people live out full lives and help them get jobs, find friendship, or even trap them all in pools to slowly die. Fun stuff. The Sims 4 might be the “newest” game in the series, but it’s not young. It was first released eight years ago in September 2014. Since then, EA has released over 50 pieces of paid DLC for the game in various ...

8 Fantastic Back-To-School Video Games To Close Out Your Summer

Image: Don’t NodThe episodic game Life is Strange, uses high schooler Max Caulfield’s ability to rewind time to comment on friendship and consequence and the fact that, hey, life is strange. The game reminds me of the everyman character in the story, the Gossip Girl Dans of the world, the Bilbo Baggins-es, who are meant to represent us as the audience. Life is strange, we all think.Strange, too, is Max’s seniors-only boarding school Blackwell Academy, which players can explore, gossip in, and uncover secrets in as part of gameplay. But in addition to intentional weirdness, the fictional school suffers from an unfortunate developer oversight—it’s incredibly white-centric.In a 2015 article for Vice, games journalist and writer Shonté Murray-Daniels describes how Life is Strange is “a fairly ...

Mod Turns The Cat From Stray Into CJ From GTA: San Andreas

Because Stray is out on PC, there are already mods for the game, and because Stray is a game about cats, a lot of those mods are focusing on that. We’ve featured some here already, like one that lets you change the colour of the playable cat, but this one by Sirgalahad172 is a little less subtle. It takes the cat and replaces it with, as is now custom, CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The creator says “this mod is intended as a joke as cj needs to be modded in any game that exists XD”, which is fair enough, but I actually really like the story-telling possibilities here. I’ve seen people describe CJ’s stilted appearance here as “horrific” online, but I prefer to think of this—and his other modded appearances—as some wild GTA side mission where CJ is cursed by an evil wizard, and is do...
