GOG Now Allowing People To Purchase Fan Remake Of Blade Runner

Screenshot: Good Old GamesThe drama and weirdness around the disastrous Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition remake continues this week. Last time we checked in, buyers were very unhappy at the state of the game, and the creators of a popular and long-running fan version had been stiffed by the release of this newer edition. Now, some changes have been made, at least on the GOG shopfront. When Nightdive’s Enhanced Edition was first released, it took the place of a faithful recreation of the original 1997 game that had been reverse-engineered by fans, removing not just the ability to download this version, but scrubbing its positive reviews as well (the remake, at time of posting, has an overall rating of 1.5/5).An attempt to rectify this was made when the Enhanced Edition started bundling the fan...

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Will Be A Trilogy, Part 2 Out In 2023

Screenshot: Square Enix / KotakuToday, during Square Enix’s big Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary live stream, it was confirmed that its large-scale FFVII Remake project will be spread across three separate games as part of a remake trilogy. Part one, of course, is already out. That was Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is a very good game! As for the next entry in this newly confirmed trilogy will, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (which itself was just announced during the stream today) will be out next winter. That leaves a third, currently unnamed entry in the trilogy that will be released in the future. No details on this final game were revealed during the 15-minute stream today. If you missed it, here’s the full stream below via YouTube:FINAL FANTASY VII 25th Anniversary Celebration Sour...

The Upcoming Hollywood Gran Turismo Movie Actually Has A Plot

Screenshot: Gran Turismo 7Gran Turismo is a video game series entirely devoid of character. That’s not a criticism, just a fact: it wants to be a glossy car brochure, not tell a story, and it’s an approach that has served the games well over the decades. Now that Hollywood is making a Gran Turismo movie, though, that could have been a problem. How do you tell a story about a video game series with no story outside of “methodically buy nicer cars over hundreds of hours”? In Gran Turismo’s case, you don’t look inside the game, you look at the culture and events surrounding it, which is a surprisingly clever move. For a long time now, developers Polyphony Digital have held very serious competitions—the GT Academy—where fans could play their games in competitive scenarios, and winners would then...

New Ni No Kuni Game Is Absolutely Rotten With Crypto Garbage

Image: NetmarbleHey, there’s a new Ni No Kuni game out! And it looks beautiful! This should be cause for celebration, but we don’t deserve nice things. So instead, we have got a mobile/PC gacha game that is built on a foundation of crypto nonsense. As we’ve covered, the supposed ‘value’ of the these markets is in freefall, but while that’s bad news for ‘owners’ of cartoon jpgs and made-up currencies, many video game studios and publishers are pushing on regardless, and among them are Korean developers Netmarble, the team behind Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds, which despite an Asian release in 2021 was only made available in the West last week.Look at this trailer, and you’ll see why fans of the series—and of Studio Ghibli—might have got excited! This is sadly now the part of the story where I tell...

Pirates Trolled By Game With Error Messages And Endless Rain

Photo: Emilia Drewniak (Getty Images)One of my favourite things to write about on this website are the creative ways developers have learned to fuck with people pirating their video games, so it’s with great pleasure I get to share another example today.Ross Symons, the CEO of Big Ant Studios, has been talking on Twitter today about some of the measures his company have used to deal with pirates, which are far more creative then just denying them access to the game.Speaking specifically about sports game Cricket 22, the studios’ latest release, he says Big Ant just turned on their own idea of piracy protection for the game, which involves making the whole screen flash white between matches. Like these kind of anti-piracy measures often do, it’s drawn a lot of oblivious pirates to the game’...

No Man’s Sky Goes Roguelike With Leviathan Space Whale Update

Screenshot: Hello GamesThe next No Man’s Sky expansion is all about space whales. Well, okay, there’s a whole new, roguelike-style expedition for players to tackle too but come on. Space whales, baby.Today’s update, called “Leviathan,” sees the immense No Man’s Sky universe get a little bigger with the introduction of the aforementioned megafauna and a challenging mission that players will need to overcome together. Losing your one life means starting the whole thing over again with a new loadout, but the further into it the No Man’s Sky community gets, the easier reaching the end will be for everyone. Here’s how No Man’s Sky studio Hello Games describes what the Leviathan update brings to the table:Difficulty has been turned up in a variety of ways, but every death means a reset of the loo...

The Best Lord Of The Rings Video Games

Image: EATolkien’s influence on video games stretches back decades. Fans have been playing games based on The Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit) for almost as long as there have been video games, and for every misguided flop there has been a game that has been surprisingly OK for a licensed product. And in some cases much better than that. Here are five of the best of them:THE HOBBITImage: BeamAustralian studio Beam Software made a number of LotR games, but their first remains the most important. The Hobbit, released in 1982, is an absolute adventure game classic that helped push the genre forwards in a number of ways, from its inclusion of illustrations to a complex text-entry system that let users string together long sentences (instead of just typing “open door”). It even had a primitive...

Skyrim Player Recreates Themselves Perfectly With In-Game Face

The very first time I played Skyrim back in 2011 I rushed through the character creation and made a guy that ended up looking like Matt Pike, which ruled. The second time, though, I spent an age trying to put myself in the game and couldn’t get anywhere near it.I took photos of myself, I asked my wife for help, and while I could easily blame my weird face—it’s 70% forehead—for this, I am instead going to blame the limited tools available to me at the time. Given my hardships, then, it’s incredible to see how far character creation has come in the decade since the game’s release, because the pictures you’re seeing in this blog are an example of what players can do now (with a little bit of help, of course). This is AureliaRiddle, a Skyrim player who has achieved an almost complete likeness i...

EA Is Once Again Developing A Lord Of The Rings Video Game

Image: EAI know licensing isn’t the sexiest topic, but when it comes to certain properties—like Star Wars and major sports—it plays a super important role in what games we get to play and who makes them. Which is my way of explaining why I’m writing about the surprise announcement that EA is making its first Lord of the Rings game since 2006.For all the shit people talk about EA in 2022, most of it for good reason, the publisher had a run in the 00's where they released a number of excellent Lord of the Rings games, like the brawler movie tie-ins, the cult Battle for Middle Earth series of strategy games and Third Age, a Final Fantasy clone that is a lot better than most people ever gave it credit for.So there’s a weird sense of nostalgia attached to the announcement today that, with the s...
