10 Best Things From 2022 We Can’t Live Without

What do you mean you don’t know what this is? Isn’t it obvious?Image: Impact Acoustics / Kotaku / LUMIKK555 (Shutterstock)2022 was the year I decided to get serious about my retrogaming setup. I was tired of having a 104lb CRT dominating half my computer desk and a PlayStation 2, MiSTer, and whatever other consoles I was currently interested in always in peripheral vision. After a bit of thought I concluded that the TV and all the consoles would be better off on a wheeled cart. A retro cart, if you would. It could live in my closet, or be wheeled out to wherever seemed fun. So I started speccing that out.The best form factor ended up having two lower shelves—for the consoles, a smaller TATE-friendly/PAL-compatible PVM-1354Q CRT a friend had recently sold me, and bookshelf speakers—with the...

Want A Steam Deck? Now You Can Buy One Without Waiting

Image: Valve / KotakuPatience is a virtue, as somehow it is still difficult to find a PlayStation 5 some two years after launch. But fortunately, if you’re in the market for a Steam Deck, there’s no longer any need to chase after a far-off pre-order: Valve is now shipping them right after purchase. No waiting, no queues, no $5 reservations. What’s more, it’s also selling an official Docking Station now.Valve announced the easier ordering and new Docking Station accessory’s availability via Twitter and Steam. On top of that, Valve announced “lots and lots” of software updates for SteamOS, which it says will dramatically improve the docking experience. The keyboard is getting an update too, as is offline mode. (The latter should help mitigate a common pain point for Steam Deck users, as many...

Steam Deck Is Surprisingly Great As A PC—Here’s How To Do It

It only does...everything?Gif: KotakuThe more time I spend with Valve’s Steam Deck, the more I’m fascinated by it. While it’s obviously rad for the incredibly rich selection of games it plays, I’ve found it’s actually a really solid mini-PC for work, creation, and just everyday PC-related tasks, so today I’ll show you how to get started using your Deck as a powerful little PC in its own right.Don’t worry, none of this involves installing weird software, arcane Linux witchery, or using another OS. While SteamOS has some room for improvement, Valve’s initial offering is very impressive, making for a fun, experimental little computer that’s great for taking a first taste of Linux. It’s cool to also have that in a device that plays AAA games. And indie games. And weird art games. And it’s also...

Linus Tech Tips Rebuild The Steam Deck With Ultimate Version

Valve’s Steam Deck has been a success so far, its (relatively) modest specs not really an issue when weighed against the size of the screen and the fact you can play it on the bus. But because it’s essentially a small PC, the temptation is always there to improve it.Which is exactly what Linus Tech Tips has done in their latest video, taking Valve’s humble handheld and juicing it in some key areas. While they obviously don’t change the Steam Deck’s CPU or GPU, they could make some key additions/replacements elsewhere in an attempt to improve the device’s performance. That includes removing the Steam Deck’s potentiometer-based joysticks and replacing them with some electromagnetic ones. These have a number of advantages, including better durability (they won’t drift) and a smaller “deadzone”...

Steam Deck’s Web Browser Badly Needs An Update

Screenshot: Valve / Mozilla / KotakuAs has been reported by Gaming on Linux, and chatted about on Reddit, the Steam Deck has got a bit of a security problem concerning its pretty badly outdated version of Firefox. Valve has reportedly promised a fix, but it won’t come until the next SteamOS update. That’s less than ideal. The current version of the popular non-chromium browser is 102.0.1, while SteamOS sports the six-month-old version 96.0.3. You don’t need to be a Def Con hacking conference regular to know that you shouldn’t run around with an out-of-date web browser, particularly one you use to store passwords for, oh, I don’t know, social media websites, banking websites, or even Steam itself. (By the way: Don’t store passwords in your browser. That’s what password managers are for.) Va...

The Steam Deck’s Specs Have Changed, With New SSDs Installed

Image: ValveAnyone who bought one of Valve’s Steam Decks at launch got a very particular model of solid state drive installed in their device. Anyone buying one more recently has received a different drive, one that’s potentially slower. As Hardwareluxx report (via PC Gamer), all Steam Decks that originally shipped with either a 256 or 512GB SSD would have had them connected via four “lanes”. Now some units are shipping with drives that connect via just two “lanes”, a change that could in theory result in slower performance since you’re essentially halving the drive’s bandwidth. This downgrade wasn’t publicly announced via a press release or statement, and Steam Decks shipping with these newer drives haven’t been differentiated by a new model number. Indeed the only public mention of the ch...
