Skyrim Co-Op Mod Released For PC, Can Support Over 30 Players

Screenshot: Skyrim Reborn TogetherI know there have been a lot of attempts at releasing multiplayer mods for Skyrim over the years, but none of those have been as ambitious as the co-op mod Skyrim Together Reborn, which aims to get between 2-8 players running around in the same game, completing the same quests and fighting the same monsters. The mod, which has been years in the making, was released last week. And while it’s not without its teething problems—you can read some of those here—for the most part it works, allowing players to jump into the same world and have all their actions and progress sync up. To see what this is like in action, here’s a video the development team released earlier in the year, showing five players completing a few story missions:Skyrim Together Reborn quest s...

Replaying God Of War Before Ragnarök? Ignore The New Game Plus

Image: SonyAs the prophecies (aka, Sony’s vast marketing machine) foretold, Ragnarök is coming. Yesterday, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio announced a November release date for its upcoming action game God of War Ragnarök. Maybe you’ve found yourself itching to replay its predecessor, God of War. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been doing so and lemme tell you: New game plus does not do it for me.A few months after God of War’s initial 2018 release, Sony added a new game plus mode to the game. Like most similar modes, you can start a fresh save file with all of the skills and gear you earned over your prior playthrough. Enemies are scaled up in difficulty to match your abilities. From the perspective of pure power fantasy, it’s a blast and, to a certain extent, God of War’s new game plus makes re...

Halo 2’s Iconic E3 Trailer Will Be A Playable Level, Someday

Screenshot: Bungie / KotakuThe coolest part of Halo 2 never made it into Halo 2. If you’re at all a fan of the series, you know exactly what I’m talking about: the “Earthcity” demo, shown off during Microsoft’s E3 presentation in 2003. That level never made it into the full release of Halo 2, but nearly two decades later, a playable build is in the works, 343 Industries announced today in a blog post.Just to give you a sense of how earth-shatteringly cool this is, here’s my real-time reaction upon learning the news, copied directly from Kotaku’s Slack channel:waitno fucking waynofuckingwaygemr2cmt4p4t3p2m8mp2340u9[m[0m19tsry srymy face fell onto my keyboardIn the cold light of today’s fidelity arms race, you might not get this impression looking at the clip’s lo-fi visuals, but it’s hard t...

Hands Of Necromancy Is So Good It Could’ve Been Hexen III

Screenshot: HON Team / KotakuIn the mood for a retro-style FPS, I dug around the new releases on Steam, and poked at a few, not really clicking. Until, that is, I found Hands Of Necromancy, and then played it all weekend. This is a Hexen-like FPS, with enormous, sprawling maps, a whole bunch of weapons, an array of enemy types, and some fresh ideas original to the genre. In three chapters, like all such games should be, the game’s 21 maps are spread between these via three hubs. Each hub has a collection of portals, unlocked by completing tasks in one or another, and dashing between them all as you find keys, new abilities, and so on. It gives it a little flavour of Metroid in amongst the fast-paced frenetic combat and exploration.Buried Treasure This article originally appeared on Buried...

Yakuza Fan Is Fixing The PS2 Original’s Localization Mistakes

It’s easy to forget in 2022, now that it feels like we get a new or remastered Yakuza game every six months, that for a very long time the series was MIA from Western shores, in large part down to the disastrous decisions made by Sega for the original game’s release back in 2006.The whole point of the Yakuza series is that it’s Japanese as hell, from the convenience stores to the overwrought voice-acting, but for the series’ debut in North America and Europe Sega made the bizarre decision to essentially tilt the entire experience on its axis via its localisation.Voice actors like Michael Madsen, Mark Hamill and Eliza Dushku were brought in (at the expense of the Japanse audio track, which was cut entirely), the script’s tone was altered to be a bit more street and the whole vibe of the gam...

Tony Hawk Says A Pro Skater 3+4 Remake Was Killed By Activision

Image: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4From 1991 until 2021, Vicarious Visions was the name of a studio that made a ton of pretty cool licensed games, but which had also contributed to the beloved Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. Then Activision stepped in and made some changes. In January 2021, having just released a remake of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2, Activision announced that the developers were being merged into Blizzard, and would also be receiving a name change, effectively killing off the studio as we knew it.I said at the time, “This sucks!”, but it sucks even more now because of the claims—from someone who would know—that the developers had been planning on repeating the remake treatment with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4.On a recent stream by Neversoft, and Vicarious veteran andyTHPS, Tony Hawk hims...

Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 Has Now Changed Its Very Bad Logo

When Street Fighter 6 was first unveiled earlier this year, one of the weirdest and most noteworthy things about its otherwise unremarkable trailer was the game’s logo. Which, as I said at the time, looked a lot like a piece of clipart. If you missed it, here is the Street Fighter 6 logo as it was shown off in February on the left, while on the right is a piece of clipart available commercially from Adobe for $80.Image: CapcomConsidering the series’ long and proud history with badass logos, this was a huge disappointment! Kingdom Heart Cloud Versions Get ‘Busy Servers’ Warning

Once, long ago, buying and playing a video game was pretty easy. You bought the disc or cart, stuck it in the console, and hit play. Not so much anymore. Case in point: The not-so-great cloud-streaming-only versions of Kingdom Hearts released on Switch earlier this year recently got an update, and now feature a warning letting you know if it’s not a good time to play the single-player games you already bought. Welcome to the future. It sucks.Released yesterday, update 1.03 for all of the Kingdom Heart games on Switch seems to mainly add two features. In Kingdom Hearts 3, players can now choose between two performance options: “Prioritize Performance” and “Prioritize Graphics Quality.” These settings can be selected before you start playing and allow the game to either focus on a more stabl...

Halo 3 ODST Mod Adds New Guns, Elites To A Classic Sandbox

Screenshot: 343 Industries / HarbingerIn case you’re eager for some more Halo content but want to wait until Infinite figures itself out first, one of the best campaigns of the series just received an impressive mod that widens the sandbox, throws new enemies at you, and promises more updates around the corner. Halo 3: ODST Reimagining, a solo effort from modder Harbinger (backed up by a team of testers), has one clear and direct goal: to make the classic campaign’s romp through the rain-drenched city streets of New Mombasa “more fun.” It accomplishes this by bringing in new enemy types, AI behavior, and weapons from some of the other games to make up for the original’s otherwise smaller selection of firearms and lore-bound enemy forces. Speaking with Harbinger on Discord, he explained tha...
