Square Enix Is Drowning 2022 With RPGs, And We’re Here For It

Image: Square Enix / Kotaku2022 is a great year to be an RPG fan, particularly of Japanese games. The holiday season is usually crowded with new game releases, but this year Square Enix appears to be releasing games like it’s Christmas all year round. With so many out already, and so many more to come, are SE’s profligate ways good or bad for RPG lovers?Back in March 2022, Square Enix had a string of big releases all throughout the month: Babylon’s Fall, a live-service action game; Triangle Strategy, a strategy RPG game; Chocobo GP, a racing game spin-off of the Final Fantasy series; and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, an action RPG game in collaboration with Koei Tecmo.Square Enix has always had a habit of releasing handfuls of games in a rush, mixing big names from reliable IPs with...

“Looks like a prison from here, a cage of light.”Image: CD Projekt Red / UJBCyberpunk 2077 might be getting its first major expansion next year, but that hasn’t stopped fans from creating their own mods for the game so they can finally have Netflix’s popular anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, in the game for realsies. Following the release of animation studio Trigger and developer CD Projekt Red’s 10-episode anime tie-in series, Cyberpunk 2077 has experienced a resurgence as one of the most popular games on Steam. Since our last article on the matter, in which Cyberpunk 2077 averaged a total of 85,555 concurrent players, the open-world role-playing game is now pulling big boy numbers with CDPR claiming that the game has had a whopping one million players each night across platforms.Read...

The Best And Worst Parts Of Every Assassin’s Creed Game

Image: UbisoftBest: Commanding Other Assassins: In the next entry in the Ezio trilogy, players get to help start their own chapter of assassins. Sure, this involves some busywork, but it also means you eventually get the ability to command assassins with a simple button press. And it rules! Walking through an area and using your assassins to take out guards one by one, without having to lift a sword, is still one of my favorite video game memories. Worst: Sequel Onslaught: Assassin’s Creed II was released on November 17, 2009. Brotherhood was released basically a year later, on November 16, 2010. This was the start of yearly installments of the franchise, and that’s not even counting spin-offs, mobile games, DLC, and ports. The final game in the Ezio Trilogy, Revelations, would release alm...

Star Citizen Site Has Now Raised Over Half A Billion Dollars

Image: Cloud ImperiumStar Citizen, a video game that exists as a Forever Promise, was first revealed to the world back in 2012 via a Kickstarter campaign that raised $2.1 million. In the decade since, through the announcements of spin-offs, modules, in-game economies and countless other features and half-baked ideas, the game seems no closer to an actual release. One thing it has accomplished, though, is make some money. Lots of money. As pointed out earlier today in this Reddit post, the game’s official “funds raised” tracker on its website just ticked over the $500 million mark. At time of posting it stands at $500,089,473 raised, from 4,096,539 backers. Half a billion dollars. For a video game that has been in development for over a decade. Were this five years ago, this is the point whe...

Big GTA VI Leak Shows How Blockbuster Video Games Are Made

Last night a ton of videos leaked online that are likely from Grand Theft Auto VI, a video game currently in development and probably years away from release. The footage is rough, in many instances using little more than placeholder assets, and it is both the most remarkable and most normal thing you’ll see this week. It’s remarkable, of course, because of the scale of the leaks. This is one of the biggest video games series on the planet. Rockstar are notoriously secretive. To get any kind of credible leak out of a Rockstar game development studio is rare; to get footage like this is unprecedented. Yet it’s also normal because this is what a video game in development looks like. It’s supposed to be rough, because it’s not finished. Comparing the “game” in this footage to the finished prod...

Huge Grand Theft Auto VI Leak Shows Gameplay And Characters

Image: Rockstar GamesA user on GTAForums, who claims to have also been behind the recent hack of Uber, has just dumped nearly 100 videos online claiming to show development footage of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI, which are currently cicrulating across pretty much every social media platform.Matching much of what Bloomberg reported earlier this year—including that the game will co-star a woman and be set in Vice City—the videos are very much in-development footage, with unfinished textures and models all over the place, and code playing out in real-time across many of them. The leaker is currently taking requests asking people what else they’d like to see in more videos. In one, a white male playable character encounters a racist NPC by a poolside, and as the conversation transpires you c...
