Former Nintendo Boss Reggie Tells Companies To ‘Embrace’ Unions

Photo: Allen Berezovsky (Getty Images)In an interview yesterday, former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime was asked about his thoughts on unions, which currently barely exist in the video game industry. Fils-Aime’s answer was not a ringing endorsement of unions, with the former exec saying they aren’t good or bad, just a situation to be dealt with. But he did add that companies should embrace unionization if their employees want it. Unionization is in the air, as yesterday, employees at Raven Software—a studio that works on Call of Duty Warzone—made history when its QA staff voted to unionize, becoming the first union at a large-scale, AAA video game company. This followed months of union-busting from parent company Activision Blizzard. As a result, some high-ranking video game ind...

And Now, Your Zombie E3 2022 Press Conference Schedule

Image: Kotaku / Superstar (Shutterstock) / Charley Gallay (Getty Images)E3? More like E0! That’s the sort of total groaner you could expect to hear at an E3 press conference—y’know, if the games industry’s historically biggest marketing event was actually happening in 2022.Yes, for the second time in three years, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has called off its flagship event. In 2020, event organizers declined to host an E3, citing the covid-19 pandemic. Last year, it returned, but as a purely digital charade. Rumors around E3 2022’s cancellation swirled as early as January, and the ESA officially called off the event in the spring, saying it would return next year. But the show(s) must go on. In fact, without an E3 to suck up all the oxygen in the room, the roadmap for vide...

Pokémon Legends Arceus Outsells Classics, Proves Risks Pay Off

Screenshot: NintendoAccording to the fiscal report that Nintendo released today, Pokémon Legends: Arceus sold 12.64 million units last year. While it doesn’t usurp Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s combined sales figure of 14.65 million, it’s nevertheless impressive for an original title that deviated so far from every mainline game in the series. Legends is currently sitting at number fifteen on the VGChartz list, directly under HeartGold and SoulSilver. It’s also sitting above Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, and both FireRed and LeafGreen. Whether you think that Legends is a quirky experiment or a main Pokémon game, the sales figures solidly establish the open world monster-catcher as a giant among the classics. The rankings are especially wild when you consider how much controver...

Rockstar Parent Company CEO Earns Big Bonus For In-Game Sales

Photo: John Phillips (Getty Images)Microtransactions in games like Grand Theft Auto Online have become big business for video game publishers. And it’s likely this won’t be changing anytime soon. New details spotted in a recent contract extension for Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explain that the CEO will earn a big bonus if more players spend more money buying in-game items, coins, and skins. As reported by Axios, a new contract extension for Zelnick means the 64-year-old CEO will continue running Take-Two until 2029. It also lays out how the executive will benefit greatly if games like GTA Online, NBA 2K, and Borderlands get players to spend extra cash on in-game items, referred to in the contract as “recurrent consumer spending” or RCS items. These items are defined by Take-Two’s contract...

Halo 3 ODST Mod Adds New Guns, Elites To A Classic Sandbox

Screenshot: 343 Industries / HarbingerIn case you’re eager for some more Halo content but want to wait until Infinite figures itself out first, one of the best campaigns of the series just received an impressive mod that widens the sandbox, throws new enemies at you, and promises more updates around the corner. Halo 3: ODST Reimagining, a solo effort from modder Harbinger (backed up by a team of testers), has one clear and direct goal: to make the classic campaign’s romp through the rain-drenched city streets of New Mombasa “more fun.” It accomplishes this by bringing in new enemy types, AI behavior, and weapons from some of the other games to make up for the original’s otherwise smaller selection of firearms and lore-bound enemy forces. Speaking with Harbinger on Discord, he explained tha...
