Stadia Fans Still Clocking Thousands Of Hours On ‘Dead’ Service

Image: Google / Kotaku / Zoa.Arts (Shutterstock)Google Stadia hasn’t really been in the mainstream spotlight since its high-profile launch in 2019. And outside of bad news and poor reviews, it mainly disappeared from most gaming sites and YouTube channels. But the players who’ve invested hundreds or even thousands of hours into Google’s video game streaming service don’t seem to care what others think. To them, Google Stadia is the perfect solution to a hobby that they feel has become too expensive, complicated, and restrictive. For most of you reading this, Google Stadia is that cloud-based streaming video game service Google launched a few years ago which may or may not be around still. It’s likely not something you engage with beyond reading occasional stories on Kotaku and other sites ...

New Alone In The Dark Reboot Game Announced By THQ Nordic

Image: THQ NordicIn 1992, a horror game called Alone in the Dark was released. It was notable for the fact that it was basically doing a lot of what would later make Resident Evil so popular—the fixed camera angles, the deliberate gunplay—only it had a lot more purple in it.It was a very good game, and did well enough that two sequels were released through the 1990s. In 2001, though, what was originally planned as a fourth game ended up becoming a reboot. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare came full circle by copying a lot of Resident Evil’s visual trappings and setting the game in the present day. It sucked.Seven years later, in 2008, the series was rebooted again on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and once again, it sucked. And in 2015 the Alone in the Dark franchise had reached a new low with a...

Elden Ring Player Proves Faith Builds Rule With One Shot Kills

Elden Ring’s faith stat is pretty flexible to build around, particularly because developer FromSoftware baked so many incantations and spells into the game. Still, it tends to see very little use at high levels, as YouTuber Your Average Gamer put it in an email to Kotaku Dot Com, folks claim it’s not as good as other in-game stats like the health-defining vigor. In an effort to prove the masses wrong, Your Average Gamer took their ardent belief in faith and put it to the test. Not only did they take on the hardest difficulty possible, they also absolutely demolished a variety of bosses, including ones like Radagon and the Elden Beast, in a single attack. It’s nuts!Matthew “Your Average Gamer” Farnkopf is a YouTuber dedicated to putting together “crazy Elden Ring builds.” They’ve got a vide...

Bungie Throwing Shit At Wall In Court

Image: Bungie / KotakuLast year, Bungie filed a lawsuit against alleged Destiny 2 cheat maker AimJunkies claiming copyright infringement. Then, earlier this year, a judge dismissed most of that case, forcing Bungie to refile its lawsuit. Now, AimJunkies is fighting back, claiming in a press release that the former Halo dev is wrong in its claims that AimJunkies’ software caused any harm. What’s more, the company suggests that Bungie is throwing “shit” at “the wall” in court in an effort to see what sticks. As reported by TorrentFreak, AimJunkies is firing back at Bungie via press release following its earlier victory in court against the studio behind Destiny. That victory happened back in April of this year, when a federal judge dismissed most of Bungie’s lawsuit against the cheat maker, s...

The Best And Worst Parts Of Every Halo Game

Screenshot: MicrosoftBest: They did it, they actually stuck the landing. It seems quaint, in this era of sprawling canon and cinematic universes, that a trilogy could actually…end. But Halo 3 actually pulled it off, marrying a satisfying resolution with just enough tragedy to give it impact. Then, of course, there’s the suitable send-off for Master Chief, left floating in space on a riven interstellar cruiser with no one but Cortana, his longtime AI companion, for company. Who can forget her timeless coda: “Wake me, when you need me.”Worst: Nothing. I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I have anything here—or, at the very least, anything I’d cite as the “worst” part of Halo 3 would be disingenuous, at best. Though it’s no doubt aged, some of its design choices feeling ancient when weighed up ag...

MIcrosoft Bug Says Elden Rings, GTA V Available On Game Pass

Image: Elden Ring / GTA VEarlier this week, some folks checking Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming beta website noticed something weird: listings for games like Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V not only said they were part of the company’s Game Pass offering, but would also be playable on the cloud. Here’s a screengrab of Elden Ring’s page taken by @klobrille, clearly showing both the “GAME PASS” badge and the fact that it’s playable on the Cloud Gaming beta:Listings for Grand Theft Auto V (which has already been on the service and left) and, weirdly, Soul Hackers revealed the same thing, in that none of the games had previously been available either on Game Pass or on Cloud Gaming, but now here they were. Even weirder is the fact that none of those things had ever been announced, which you’d think ...

Overwatch’s Loot Boxes Are Finally Going Away, Rest In Peace

Overwatch’s Loot Boxes may not have been the first in video game history, but they quickly became one of the most important, even if we were sick of them as early as June 2016, which was...one month after the game’s release. While somewhat novel at the time, they helped pave the way for even worse examples, like Battlefront II’s disastrous implementation, and as profitable as they were for publishers they were also so unpopular with fans (and with governments and regulators who accuse them of encouraging kids to gamble) that many series—including Overwatch itself—have begun to move away from them. That’s right, Overwatch 2 won’t be using Loot Boxes, instead opting for a more direct way of purchasing stuff:There will be no Loot Boxes in Overwatch 2. Instead, the modernized live service will g...

Elden Ring Just Got A Huge Update That Nerfs Bloodhound Step

Screenshot: FromSoftwareIt’s been a while since Elden Ring saw any love, but patch 1.06 is here. There’s not much in the way of new additions, though notably the update means you can now do co-op or invasions in multiple places at once in addition to having larger invasion area. There’s also a new mysterious NPC who is supposed to help you advance Varre’s questline without wading into multiplayer at all, though in typical FromSoftware fashion no word on where to find this useful fellow. Still, the update is an enormous one, at least when it comes to gameplay tweaks. The much-reviled Bloodhound Step, an Ash of War which allows you to dodge attacks at high speeds while becoming invisible, has been tuned down so that the more you use it, the less effective it is. Bloodhound Step does also go f...

Final Fantasy Take On Stardew Valley Reveals Horny Produce

Image: Square EnixHarvestella is only a few months away and Square Enix is finally starting to dish a little more on its social farming sim. While the core loop will focus as much on job-based combat and character relationships as anything else, raising fruit and vegetables will also play an important role. Thankfully, Square confirmed players will get to harvest some of the hornier produce out there. There is no shortage of normie real-world plants to incorporate into a JRPG take on Stardew Valley. Apples, oranges, and grapes immediately come to mind. Cabbage, carrots, and potatoes as well. But developer Live Wire didn’t reveal any of those in Square Enix’s latest blog post about the game. Instead, it led with peaches and cucumbers:Image: Square EnixImage: Square Enix“Spring crops include ...
