Broforce Returns In 2023 With Broforce Forever, A Big Update

Image: BroforceHave you ever played Broforce? Or even heard of it? You’d be forgiven for answering “no” to both those questions because, as I flip tragically backwards through my desktop calendar, I can see that the game came out eight years ago.I absolutely loved it back then, not just for its “you can’t sue us these are technically different” roster of characters (all drawn from popular action movies and TV shows, mostly from the 80s, ranging from Die Hard to Rambo to The Terminator to Aliens) but for its gleefully explosive platforming, which played like Metal Slug if the level designers had chugged five beers before going to work and thought blowing up half the levels was the best idea ever (it is). When evil threatens the world, the world calls on Broforce – an under-funded, over-pow...

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Could Turn Me, A Hater, Into A Fan

Image: Firaxis GamesI tend to land on the Martin Scorsese side of the superhero craze—“The problem is the amusement park films,” he said in 2019—and so I admittedly went into Marvel’s Midnight Suns feeling bratty. The tactical role-playing game, which was delayed twice before finally landing on its current December 2 release date, comes from adored XCOM creators Firaxis Games, but even that association of dignity didn’t feel like enough to dull what I saw as a too-squeaky superhero sheen. I was wrong, though. To put it in amusement park terms: oh boy! This game is fun! You primarily control The Hunter, the child of sexy demon lady Lilith, back on the prowl after evil paramilitary group Hydra revived and unleashed her on New York City. In response, the Avengers and goth kid sorcery group, th...

The Sims 4 Devs Apologize To Black Creators After Big Showcase

Screenshot: Electronic ArtsAfter EA unveiled the next installment of The Sims during last week’s Sims Summit, Black content creators were not happy about the lack of inclusion. Critics noted that out of twenty or so people shown, only one was a Black streamer. The publisher showcased Project Rene (which we’ve been calling The Sims 5) and an official modding hub to its eager audience at the Summit on October 18. The stream celebrated its content creator community with a two-minute segment showing their reactions to the baby update. EA included more white people with non-American accents than it did Black creators overall.“Black Simmers [have] been a major impact on The Sims community for years. Literally, the backbone for providing skin tones, body features, hairstyles, and more. Everything ...

Every U.S. PlayStation 2 Game Manual Is Now Scanned In 4K

Physical game manuals are hard to come by these days, especially as the industry begins to heavily lean into cloud streaming and digital-first infrastructures. But if you remember those good ole times when game boxes came with chunky pamphlets for you to peruse before jumping into your recent purchase, a games preservationist called Kirkland seeks to preserve that nostalgia for posterity by creating high-quality scans of the manuals of yore. In fact, he’s just finished uploading his complete set of U.S. PlayStation 2 manual scans.Launched in the U.S. in October 2000—22 years ago this Wednesday—Sony’s PlayStation 2 was one of the most popular consoles ever. With more than 4,000 games released worldwide and selling approximately 158 million units globally, just about everyone had a PS2. Game...

Bayonetta’s Devs Issue Statement In Support Of Jennifer Hale

Image: NintendoThe story behind the casting of the lead voice acting role for the third game in the Bayonetta series has been a complete mess, involving allegations of terrible pay, conflicting accounts and Non-Disclosure Agreements. Bayonetta Voice Actress Urges Game Boycott Over ‘Insulting’ Pay

Screenshot: PlatinumGames / NintendoEarly in October, Japanese developer PlatinumGames, known for its action titles, told Game Informer that upcoming Switch exclusive Bayonetta 3 would not see voice actress Hellena Taylor reprise her iconic sultry role as the protagonist. Instead, Bayonetta’s english VA would now be Jennifer Hale, one of the industry’s most ubiquitous voice actresses who is known for roles like Commander Shepard. At the time, Platinum claimed that the replacement was due to “various overlapping circumstances” that made it “difficult” for Hellena to play Bayonetta once again. Over a week later, Taylor has gone on to social media to dispute Platinum’s account, suggesting that the studio wasn’t entirely being transparent about what actually happened.Rather than losing out on ...

Far Cry 6 GOTY Somehow Costs $120 Despite Almost No Awards

Image: UbisoftEven by the loose standards of video game marketing, calling Far Cry 6 one of 2021's games of the year was a stretch. But Ubisoft went ahead and did it anyway. It didn’t stop there, either. The French publisher will also be charging $120 for this spruced-up release of its 2021 sequel. That’s the price of two GOTYs, one for each actual GOTY mention Far Cry 6 received from some extremely garbled end-of-year lists. Store listings officially confirming Far Cry 6 Game of the Year Edition’s existence and price recently went live on the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts, so no, it was not all just some weird fever dream. What will this new version of last year’s Cuban revolution-inspired open-world shooter include, exactly? An unannounced expansion called Lost Between Worlds for one....

Square Enix Is Drowning 2022 With RPGs, And We’re Here For It

Image: Square Enix / Kotaku2022 is a great year to be an RPG fan, particularly of Japanese games. The holiday season is usually crowded with new game releases, but this year Square Enix appears to be releasing games like it’s Christmas all year round. With so many out already, and so many more to come, are SE’s profligate ways good or bad for RPG lovers?Back in March 2022, Square Enix had a string of big releases all throughout the month: Babylon’s Fall, a live-service action game; Triangle Strategy, a strategy RPG game; Chocobo GP, a racing game spin-off of the Final Fantasy series; and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, an action RPG game in collaboration with Koei Tecmo.Square Enix has always had a habit of releasing handfuls of games in a rush, mixing big names from reliable IPs with...
