Logitech’s Game Pass Streaming Handheld Is Too Expensive

Having a (relatively) small device that can play basically any big game on it is a cool idea, and that’s what I love about Valve’s Steam Deck. But the Deck can be a bit bulky, and its battery just doesn’t last sometimes. Plus it doesn’t work easily with Xbox Game Pass. So the idea of a new, smaller handheld dedicated to streaming Game Pass and Xbox titles sounds great! However, at $300, it seems too expensive in a world where the Steam Deck and Switch OLED exist at around the same price point. Announced today by Microsoft and Logitech, the new G Cloud handheld gaming console is a small Android-powered device built around streaming video games. 10 years ago this would have seemed like a weird idea. But today, you can stream practically every game across most platforms with enough tinkering....

Phil Spencer Says Xbox Series Price Hikes Unlikely, For Now

Photo: JUNG YEON-JE / Kotaku (Getty Images)Sony turned a few heads when it unexpectedly hiked prices on the PlayStation 5 in the second year of the current generation of consoles. Naturally, many wondered if the same complicated economic situations we all find ourselves in would see a spike in Xbox prices as well. In a recent interview with CNBC, however, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, stated that raising the price of the Xbox Series line wouldn’t be a wise move for the company right now. He also explained that Microsoft has no plans to slow down on investing in game studios, despite the Activision Blizzard bid. While in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show, Phil Spencer appeared on CNBC to talk about Microsoft’s potential interest in acquiring more companies, how it sees itself in the Japanese video...

Sony’s Death Stranding Comes To PC Game Pass Next Week

Screenshot: 505 GamesIn a most peculiar state of affairs, PlayStation console exclusive, Death Stranding, is coming to Microsoft’s PC Game Pass. Subscribers to the latter service will soon be able to fall over on a hill for no additional cost. The news was announced by Microsoft via a neat tweet, showing a Sam “Porter Bridges”-a-like carrying a metal case across an airfield, sporting a sticker boasting “DEATH STRANDING - PC GAME PASS - AUGUST 23, 2022.”2019's Sony-published wobbly-man simulator has been available on PC for a couple of years, ported across eight months after its original release. That was via Italian publisher 505 Games, and it’s this company that has made the deal with Kojima Productions to see the game arrive on PC Game Pass.Despite 505 also releasing a PC version of the D...

Microsoft Schools Sony On How To Better Run PlayStation Plus

Image: Sony / Microsoft / KotakuThat treasure trove of a document filed by Microsoft to the Brazilian competition authorities on Tuesday, in response to Sony’s objections to its efforts to buy Activision Blizzard, contains another absolute gem. In it, Microsoft took time out to tell Sony just how it could (read: should) better run its revamped PS Plus service such that it wouldn’t need to worry so much about competition like, say, Xbox Game Pass.As Kotaku reported earlier, the document—sent as part of one of the many international competition enquiries into Microsoft’s attempt to purchase Activision Blizzard—accuses Sony of creating deals with publishers that prevent games from being allowed to appear on Game Pass, which it cites as an example of Sony’s own competitive behavior. This is ac...

Game Pass Vs. The New PS Plus, The Comparison We Had To Make

Image: Sony / Microsoft / KotakuTwo months ago, Sony reimagined PS Plus, its longtime membership program for PlayStation owners. Now, it looks a whole lot like Microsoft’s Game Pass: For roughly the same amount of money, both offer access to a Netflix-style games-on-demand library. Obviously, we had to stack the two services up against each other.PriceGame Pass is available as a subscription for console, PC, or both. The two separated tiers cost $10 a month. Xbox Live Ultimate, which joins the two and provides access to the EA Play Library (a similar games-on-demand service) and Xbox Live Gold, costs $15 a month. There is no way to pay for multiple months or a year up front at a tiered markdown (at least officially).PS Plus is also available for a subscription, but it gets very complicated...

Dude Builds A Working Xbox Series X That’s Over Six-Foot Tall

What is this, a series now? One guy builds a tiny little PS5 so someone else has to go out and build an enormous Xbox Series X?(Obviously not, it’s just weird we’ve got two of these kind of things in one week!)Michael Pick, aka The Casual Engineer, was inspired by Microsoft’s own attempts at turning the Xbox Series X into a fridge, but then equally frustrated that the larger novelty console didn’t actually work as a console anymore. So he set out to make something even bigger, and this time, build something that was still a functional video game console. The result? This enormous Xbox Series X that stands over 2m (6'5") tall and 1m (3') wide. And OK, while this took less hardware sorcery than shrinking a PS5 into a case that was only one inch wide, there’s still an impressive level of craft...

Microsoft Claims 50 Games Coming To Xbox In 2022 And 2023

Microsoft aired this graphic during its annual Xbox press conference.Screenshot: Microsoft / KotakuSix months into the year, Xbox’s release calendar is looking slim. Fresh off the heels of an absolutely banger 2021, Microsoft hasn’t released a single first-party tentpole in 2022. But that’s all set to change, Microsoft assured viewers today during its big splashy marketing showcase about big splashy games on the horizon.Halfway through today’s show—which offered long-awaited gameplay reveals for feverishly anticipated games like Starfield and Redfall—Xbox boss Phil Spencer showed off a graphic indicating 50 new games would come to Xbox within the next year. Xbox’s official social media feed tweeted out a slightly altered version of the graphic after the showcase ended:There are some minor ...

Kinect Creator Resigns After Watching ‘VR Porn’ At Work

Photo: Gabriel Bouys (Getty Images)Alex Kipman, a longtime Microsoft executive, is leaving the company after 21 years due to numerous misconduct allegations, Insider reports. The accusations include inappropriately touching female employees and watching what one witness described as “VR porn” at work. Many in the gaming world may recognize Kipman from Xbox motion-sensing accessory Kinect, on which he guided development leading up to its 2009 debut. Microsoft touted the Xbox 360 (and eventually Xbox One) peripheral as the next big thing in gaming at launch, but Kinect was officially put out to pasture in 2017 after not achieving the critical and commercial success Microsoft no doubt envisioned for it.Kipman later took on a similar role in the creation of the HoloLens, mixed-reality smart gla...

PS5 Pro And Next Xbox Series X/S: The Rumors, Explained

Photo: Diego Thomazini (Shutterstock)It feels like the current console generation is only just getting started, and yet, a corner of the internet spent a good part of this week obsessing over the next iteration, the presumed mid-generation hardware refreshes for Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S. The commotion is all thanks to an event hosted by TV maker TCL, as first reported by Polish news site PPE.This current console generation officially kicked off in November 2020, with Microsoft’s release of not one but two next-gen machines. The Xbox Series X is the flagship, capable of rendering games at 4K resolution and running them at frame rates of 60 fps. Alongside the Series X came the smaller Xbox Series S (though not capable of hitting 4K, it’s still a reliable little Ga...

Kingdom Heart Cloud Versions Get ‘Busy Servers’ Warning

Once, long ago, buying and playing a video game was pretty easy. You bought the disc or cart, stuck it in the console, and hit play. Not so much anymore. Case in point: The not-so-great cloud-streaming-only versions of Kingdom Hearts released on Switch earlier this year recently got an update, and now feature a warning letting you know if it’s not a good time to play the single-player games you already bought. Welcome to the future. It sucks.Released yesterday, update 1.03 for all of the Kingdom Heart games on Switch seems to mainly add two features. In Kingdom Hearts 3, players can now choose between two performance options: “Prioritize Performance” and “Prioritize Graphics Quality.” These settings can be selected before you start playing and allow the game to either focus on a more stabl...
